Geographically, it is bordered on the north by small headlands of Poggio San Leonardo and to the south is closed from the Tower of Baratti, above the northern slopes of the promontory of Piombino from which dominates the medieval town of Populonia.

The creek is characterized by a sandy beach, largest in north-central Gulf, which tends to decrease considerably towards the south end where there is the berth of the tourist port of Baratti. The depths were low, while the beach is characterized both by gold and amber colors, for the presence of slag, residues from processing of this metal during the Etruscan period.

In some parts behind the gulf grows a pine forest, characterized by the presence of pine and domestic, which is interrupted at the northern end of the inlet that develops in the center where the necropolis. In the undergrowth are numerous shrubs of the Mediterranean. In the south, the pine forest gives way to other vegetation types, however due to the typical Mediterranean ecosystem.
