Already by the eleventh century written sources document the urban settlement of Campiglia Marittima.

From archaeological remains the municipal notice that existed prior appropriations to the Middle Ages, but the first document is the act of appointment Campiglia Conte Gherardo II Gherardesca which, in 1004, was donated to the monastery of St. Maria Serena at Chiusdino, half of the Castle of Campiglia with the terrain and the church, along with shares of the nearby castles of Biserno, Acquaviva and Montecalvo, which is to be identified with the current Rocca S. Sylvester.
